Brook Architecture created the program and design concept for the 31st Street Harbor building. Designed in simple materials – concrete, metal and stone – the structure houses a community center, harbor store, office and boater showers. The parking garage has a green roof and provides winter boat storage.

The front of the building, located a few steps away from the new 1,000-slip marina, features grey mullioned rectangle windows with an accent of orange highlighting black signage.

Visitors walking along the adjacent promenade are rewarded with a city skyline view. Stairs on the building’s north side lead to the building’s 80,000 SF green roof that shelters a 200-car garage on the west side.

More than a marina, the harbor includes a playground and a small park. The project has earned multiple awards, including a Sustainability Leadership award from the AIA Chicago chapter. The harbor complex is certified LEED gold.
