Henry Horner Revitalization

Chicago, IL

The Chicago Housing Authority wanted its revitalized housing developments to resemble the housing found in Chicago communities.Brook Architecture’s challenge was to develop an 18-unit, 3-level apartment complex with a typical Chicago residential appearance while providing private entrances for each unit.

The design utilizes a brick and stone stair, recessed entries, towers and iron railings to create a facade reminiscent of a typical Chicago Brownstone. The ground and 1st floor entries are oriented perpendicular to the façade to reduce their appearance, while articulated cast stone banding is introduced to create a people-friendly scale. Other façade appointments include eyebrow roof vents, arched windows and cast stone insets.
