University of Chicago Athletic Field South

Chicago, IL

Brook Architecture, in conjunction with Eriksson Engineering Associates designed a new athletic field for the University of Chicago. While the engineers were designing the new soccer field turf, Brook Architecture presented several prototype service buildings to the University.

The final service building design contains restrooms, an athletic trainer’s room, IT room and storage for the fields’ equipment. Unique design elements were incorporated into the relatively small building. The leaning cast-in-place concrete wall is juxtaposed with a bright red lean-to metal roof. A translucent clerestory allows natural light into all of the building while concrete panels were a cost effective way to clad the building. At night the building glows from the up-lighting installed around the perimeter of the clerestory. Super graphics on the exterior playfully announce restroom locations and the university crest adorns the building’s corner.
