Chicago, IL

Cornerstone is the first phase of a larger development in Chicago’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Partnered with another Chicago-based design firm, Brook Architecture’s assignment was to rehab a 22-unit building and design an 8-unit loft-inspired building with spaces where artists can live and work.

Window replacement and tuck pointing were part of the exterior rehab. Interior work included new bathrooms and upgraded finishes.

Each space in the 8-unit building features utility sinks, reinforced art display walls and track lighting. The first floor has two common areas – one with a wood-sprung dance floor and the other with small practice studios. Artists will appreciate the interior’s high ceilings and the abundant daylight coming through the large windows.

Brook explored ways to distinguish the 8-unit building from the city’s numerous affordable housing developments. The façade’s wood rain screen cladding and the side elevation’s unique brick detailing add unexpected character.
